Morning buses suit day trips and office visits; late-evening buses are quieter and arrive before midnight.

On Fridays, Sundays and before Eid the evening buses fill up first, so book at least a day early for those dates.

The route

The bus leaves Lahore through Thokar Niaz Baig and joins the M-2 motorway. Most services stop once at the Bhera service area, roughly halfway, for 15 to 20 minutes. After the Salt Range near Kallar Kahar the motorway descends towards Chakri and enters the twin cities from the south. From mid-December to January, dense fog on the M-2 can close sections at night, which may delay or reschedule late departures.

Rawalpindi drop-off

Choosing the right class

On a trip of under five hours, the cheaper class is comfortable for most people. The seats recline, the coach is air-conditioned and there is a hostess service. Choose First Class or Business if you need to work on a laptop, are tall and want more legroom, or are travelling late at night and want to sleep.

If you travel every week, try both once: many regular commuters stay with the lower class for daytime trips and upgrade only for night or holiday travel.

Best time to travel

Spring (March to April) and autumn (October to November) are the easiest months: clear motorway, mild weather and normal demand. From mid-December to the end of January, night fog on the M-2 is the main risk, so morning and afternoon buses are more reliable. Summer is fine on the motorway, but the waiting areas at terminals get very hot in June and July. Avoid the two days before Eid and the evening of the last day of Eid holidays unless you have booked well in advance.

Arriving in Islamabad: getting around

Islamabad is a planned city divided into sectors (F-6, G-9, I-8 and so on), and Rawalpindi is the older, busier twin city next to it. Most visitors arriving by bus head either to an Islamabad sector, to Rawalpindi Saddar, or straight on to Murree and the northern areas.
